People in the guitar community appear to have mixed views about the musical, theoretical and philosophical value of his book.
Much of the material is impossible and frustrating for beginners and even advanced guitarists. Goodrick deals more with concepts than methods...but he is brilliant at explaining those concepts in a variety of ways. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. Some books are great to read in the bathroom... you just open them to any random page, and brilliance pours out.

This is the sort of book that one 'comes back to' periodically, while simultaneously working on other material. This book changed my life TroyHamilton Member. It is a method book for making your own method for playing guitar. I bought it before I knew how to read very well, and still got tons out of the book. It's my opinion that "The Advancing Guitarist" is the most important of all the guitar books ever written. Take the negative comments with a large grain of salt. Ever wonder how deep music and the guitar is? I am a professional guitar teacher myself and am in awe of Goodrick's knowledge.

I doubt I will ever exhaust the possibilities hinted at here. "We are happy to hear you had a positive experience! That said, the general philosophy presented in this very well organized and structured book is enormously helpful, insightful, and funny. This is a book that you can pick up at any level, and learn something. I will come back to this book for years to come. To an extent this is understandable as the presentation and approach of the book is quite different from a typical guitar 'method' book, however I would not say the book is 'radical'.
The feelings I had were feeling very liberated. Not for the beginner guitarists. This book changed my lifeI am an intermediate guitarist with just basic theory knowledge. We really appreciate it.
