A lovely paced, no Thelma hasn't the most original of plots but it has the screen shots, the timing and is enriched with its Scandinavian settings. Joachim Trier is one of the most talented filmmakers, not only in Europe but also in other geographical spaces; the perfectionism with which he builds the shots, the scenes, the sequences in this movie Thelma is truly remarkable; yet thematically this film is a disappointment - a lesbian relationship mixed with supernatural elements - and so I understand that Joachim Trier is wasting his talent by making these kind of entertainment films that only have the effect of devaluing his reputation and seriousness; his previous films, Louder Than Bombs (2015) and above all his oldest film Oslo, August 31 (2011) set the bar very high, and I hoped that each new film by Joachim Trier would overcome this bar; but what happened in Thelma was a somewhat disappointing exercise. Away from her parents’ strict upbringing, Thelma’s deep rooted Christian beliefs are confronted by taboo stirrings, and this inner conflict awakens the force within without control. Movie name. Had this movie replaced some of the 15 min shots of trees and courtyards with some more awkward lusting, I would have felt less robbed. A woman begins to fall in love, only to discover that she has fantastic powers. Somebody said get a life... so they did.. Whilst on a short weekend getaway, Louise shoots a man who had tried to rape Thelma. 3 stars for including queer people at all.
