Her story “The Deadly Choices at Memorial,” co-published by ProPublica and the New York Times Magazine, chronicled decisions made by the medical staff of one New Orleans hospital in the desperate days after Hurricane Katrina. Riveting!! This book contains and emotionally gripping and fascinating tale. The book is more than just a telling a story; it takes a look at all sides of the issue(s) and really made me think about how the staff acted throughout the disaster and how I'd handle something like that in their situation. Public opinion at the time was squarely behind the hospital staff, largely because we thought that the opportunistic former sheriff was blaming the very people, who saved so many lives, of not being even more heroic. Sheri Fink spent years reporting on this story and her writing is strong, filled with grim details and dreadful scenes, but it needed to be told.Full disclosure: until recently, I practiced medical malpractice law, and it impossible for me not to view the events recounted in this excellent and, I think, balanced book through that lens. They were not required to euthanize patients, at least one of whom was alert and required sedation first, at the very time that the evacuation was underway in earnest. I have family on the Gulf Coast who were affected by the storm and the whole event is just a little too personal. Need another excuse to treat yourself to a new book this week?

Looking for a book that will spark debate and discussion? Written by Sherri Fink, a physician and reporter spent 6 years investigating and reporting before writing this epic book about what went on after the power went out, and the back up generators failed, and things got harder to contend with. I am a healthcare professional and I was not able to put this down - the story is very well written and investigated by Sheri Fink, and describes multiple sides of the story as well as multiple ethical and moral issues. Sadly, it isn't fiction. The book was set to be the basis of the third season of the While she was writing "The Deadly Choices at Memorial", Fink decided to expand the article into a book.

Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital*I will be analyzing the content of the book.

We’d love your help.

I found her to be quite honest with her assessment of how things happen and what front line people are faced with.

You'd think. Years of life saved? I listened to the audio book while commuting and couldn't wait to get back in my car. *I am from the New Orleans area and was one of the many thousands who evacuated for Hurricane Katrina. Skips around and too much irrelevent mterial that adds nothing to the premise.

I get that its a comedy show, but one must question the wisdom of Fink's decision to go on Comedy Central to promote the book - unless her ONLY goal is to make as much money as possible off of the tragic events surrounding Katrina. It challenged my thinking over and over. What would you do if you were caught in a flood in a hospital and knew your last nine helpless patients would not be evacuated but would in all likelihood drown?

Five Days At Memorial, from ABC Signature, chronicles the first five days in a New Orleans, LA, hospital after Hurricane Katrina made landfall. was for somebody else. Though provoking Well written and leaves the reader stunned at timesi used this book to start a book club the result was lots of good discussion

The first part, titled "Deadly Choices", focuses on the events that occurred at Memorial Medical Center over the "five days" referred to in the book's title: August 28 – September 1, 2005.The second part, titled "Reckoning", discusses the legal and political ramifications of Memorial's response to the crisis and especially the decisions to euthanize patients.A more negative review came from Julia M. Sheri Fink spent years reporting on this story and her writing is strong, filled with grim details and dreadful scenes, but it needed to be told. This book is a devastating account of what happened at a hospital in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. In books like this, with topics like this there are loads of details that the author has to pare down and put in an order that the reader can follow.
Five Days At Memorial, by Sheri Fink, is a spellbinding account of Hurricane Katrina, a disaster which held patients, staff and families of a New Orleans hospital captive and left thousands of others stranded by rising flood waters in the heart of the city.

The book is written in a manner that keeps it interesting for healthcare professionals but is accessible and understandable to lay people.

... start a book club the result was lots of good discussion It was hard to read sometimes, but utterly riveting.
I highly recommend it for healthcare professionals to think about the possibility of extreme disaster and one's own possible handling of such crises, as well as for lay people who might be interested in decisions about life and death.
