Unfortunately, in addition to being less "fresh", the witty dialog also seems a little less witty--I just didn't laugh as much with this outing as the others--even the later episodes.

Comedy As you would expect, the earliest of these movies are the best, as the originality of the series began to wane by the 4th movie. He calls in new parents Nick and Nora to sort things out.

Comedy According to MGM records the film earned $1,453,000 in the US and Canada and $848,000 elsewhere resulting in a profit of $769,000. It is the fourth of six films in the Thin Man series that started with The Thin Man in 1934. Nick and Nora are at their wisecracking best as they investigate murder and racketeering at a local race track. This was one of three films in which Stella Adler appeared.

Others are killed but in the end, Nick gathers all of the suspects into a room and identifies the killer. Nick and Nora's hopes for a pleasant afternoon at the local race track are dashed when a jockey is found shot dead in the locker room. Certificate: Passed Regardless, it's still high quality series entertainment and is well worth watching. In this film, they have a son, Nicky, who's adorable and keeps Daddy on his toes. Two sisters of differing temperaments, the younger's milquetoast fiancé, and a free-spirited artist in an auto trailer are all experiencing romantic complications. The neglected wife of a high profile attorney dallies with a unscrupulous womanizer and finds herself involved in blackmail and murder.

Nick's friend Lt. Abrams wants him to help out but Nick is enjoying the good life too much to get involved.



Nick and Nora visit Nick's hometown, and end up involved in a murder.

However, he is subsequently approached by Major Scully to look into corruption and the role of organized crime in gambling. Also, in this film their son Nick Jr. (Dickie Hall) is old enough to figure in the comic subplot. Certificate: Passed

Shadow of the Thin Man does not have the same dosage of witty repartée audiences enjoyed in the first three Thin Man films (The Thin Man, After the Thin Man and Another Thin Man), although Nickie Jr. is used for comedic dialogue and interchange throughout the film. Shadow of the Thin Man keeps the series going as strong as ever, even with a new team of writers and a completely original story, as there were no more Dashell Hammett stories left to adapt.

Former detective Nick Charles and his wealthy wife Nora investigate a murder case, mostly for the fun of it. So the final verdict is that this is a decent but not great entry in the series. A scatterbrained socialite hires a vagrant as a family butler - but there's more to Godfrey than meets the eye.
