With Paul Williams singing the stronger tracks (and starring in the movie ), most of the cuts from Phantom of the Paradise suffer from being draped in early-'70s singer/songwriter mawkishness, with an effort to put a … A quirky little move with a fantastic soundtrack. But even on these tracks, Williams' songwriting comes up short, and the songs end up harboring a cheap nightclub feel that is far from the expertise that he has put toward writing songs for the Carpenters and Three Dog Night, to name just two. The Phantom's Theme. The one downer is that it doesn't have the song about meeting the devil.

A soon as this movie hits Netflicks or some other platform it will be recognized as a classic. This album is the perfect oddity to accompany the film, and it's got great music. this is for me the BEST edition !


Phantom of the Paradise is an American musical film written and directed by Brian de Palma. But on their own, songs such as Archie Hahn's "Goodbye, Eddie, Goodbye" and Jeffrey Comanor's "Upholstery" lose a large part of their potency when the visuals are taken away.

None of the releases do, though, so I can't complain.

Though the idea was a valiant one, Williams' effort along with the generic cast of other singers falls short of the mark, as his proficiency as a writer and performer can be better appreciated on numerous other works. I think the track last about 2:55 instead of what is written on the label (3:57) and instead of the CD version (3:46) .... This album is the perfect oddity to accompany the film, and it's got great music.
