It was interesting to find out that Laura Jane Grace of Against Me! A small contingent had hoped that the darkness Rivers kept referring too would pertain to the music as well. High as a Kite is up next and this is probably my favorite song on the whole album. However, where Pacific Daydream felt like a spineless attempt at pop rock chart dominance at first listed. There’s not much of a personality, the electronic elements are thrown into complete overdrive mode, Rivers tries rapping yet again which kind falls flat in a profound way. What separates it though is the slightly more interesting lyrical content. Frankly I’m just happy Weezer is still making music and their having fun doing it. The music is a little faster paced but absolutely very melancholic in its melody. This is the perfect cross section of what Weezer was and the direction they seem to be going in. Sitek’s studio sharps provides an invaluable assist in this regard, pumping up the mean pop and skewed art aspects of Weezer in equal measure. Unlike Pacific Daydream or The White Album, The Black Album doesn’t appear to have designs on modern rock radio; there may be sops to the audience, but there’s no attempt to chase a trend. It’s a somber little ditty that will get stuck in your head long after you first listen and should’ve been the lead single in my opinion. According to an interview last year with Upset Magazine, the album would be titled "The Black Album", perhaps as a companion album to their "White album" that dropped last year. But where that album stood in stark contrast to almost everything that had come before it, this new record while still laden with slick production values and overly synth-based melodies, is a total blast and somehow fits really well in the grander scheme of the Weezer canon. As the album progresses you begin to get a sense that he is starting to grow rather apathetic towards his own fan base and their demands of his band. The title is pretty straight forward in terms of what the song is about. It’s a goofy little track about ride sharing that is probably the lightest (at least in terms of thematics) on the album.

Fans were hopeful if not largely skeptical of what this album would entail. All this means is that The Black Album feels like the most fully realized latter-day Weezer album: it may flagrantly draw from old and new elements of pop culture, yet it belongs to its own feverish world.

The next song Too Many Thoughts In My Head contains probably my new favorite Weezer lyric of all time… “stayed up reading Mary Poppins, overwhelmed by too many Netflix options” It’s just a goofy throwaway line that always makes me laugh every time I hear it. The lyrics are probably the most honest of the whole album, the music features the entire band firing on all cylinders while adding that extra layer of electronica that doesn’t distract from what the band does best.
