It was founded by Sir Henry Morton Stanley in 1879. After the completion of the Matadi Bridge, securing the funds for maintenance of the bridge was a serious issue considering the national financial condition.
There is space for the rail inside of the bridge, but rails where never there. And railway construction project was set back due to a worsening of the finances of the government of Congo caused by a drop in copper prices.

During war time the bridge was guarded and still remains as of 2016." After passing through Matadi and over the bridge, it continues to Boma, Muanda and Banana.
In order for the project to succeed it was necessary for the construction period to be shortened as much as possible, and enabled to shorten more than planned 14 months by conducting types of work which could be done in parallel simultaneously as much as possible, such as by the superstructure and substructure being ordered together, and finally the Matadi Bridge was completed in May 1983. In 1985, the OEBK introduced a system to collect a toll fare in order to implement proper maintenance and the OEBK was made able to manage the fare collection on their own. 25 million of 34.5 million Japanese yen invested in the bridge returned to Japan.
