I read it only a year or so after it was published and while I’ve forgotten the details of the plot I’ve never forgotten the quality of the writing. As usual his characters are easy to get to know and to like and they are all built well but I thought the story-line was a little lacking (or perhaps it just went over my head). It might have started off slowly but the character build up is gripping and it just keeps getting better, especially when they finally all get together! The prose was stunning, the plot compelling and suspenseful, though forgettable in hindsight. it's just amazing.This is an earlier Winton and am unsure about it. I love a bleak novella but, as with most male authors, wish the female characters were written with more depth and less animosity.
