IX just about perfects what every dragon quest did in the past and expands on it.

Although v isn't a bad option in my opinion, viii is definitely my recommendation.I will always recommend IV first. Just my 2 cents. The controls were not great.Didn't care for 9, 7 (these are popular, but for me, they were lots of chores with not much story)In the end, what you find as best will depend on your tastes.

The characters and story in IV is just awesome. Relative newcomer to the series here. You start off as a child, eventually going through different stages of life while journeying. A lot of work has gone into this new 'Definitive Edition' and it is still one of the best role-playing games ever made. General opinions are that 5 or 8 is the best and 2 or 7 is the worst. It’s very unique and probably has some of the best character development in the main series. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being one of the first JRPGs for consoles and featuring consistent innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it).

My most recent RPG beaten is Final Fantasy VII for reference.I was thinking to start with DQ V but I'm I'd like to hear what series veterans think.Luckily, chronological order isn’t super important, although 1 - 3 is a trilogy and 4 - 6 is also a set, the "Zenithian Trilogy," though not quite as strongly connected.I would hold off playing 1 - 3 because they’re much older and haven’t quite been updated to fit the 21st century.
