The phrase "summer and smoke" probably comes from the Hart Crane poem "Emblems of Conduct" in the 1926 collection White Buildings.In 1964, Williams revised the play as The Eccentricities of a Nightingale.
This plot by itself isn't too strong, but with Tennessee Williams's language, it becomes more compelling. Alma, the daughter of a minister, had to assume many of the duties in the parish as her mother became mentally ill. Alma, whose name means "soul" in Spanish, is a sensitive, virtuous woman concerned with the spiritual side of life, but sexually repressed. She throws herself at him, saying, "..now I have changed my mind, or the girl who said 'no', — she doesn't exist any more, she died last summer — suffocated in smoke from something on fire inside her.".

Sidney Poitier’s 7 Most Memorable Performances This isn't Williams's best writing - some of the metaphors are overwrought and the Southern belle act has gotten cliche - but in the hands of anyone else, it would have been a bland, cliche story about a man being saved by the love of a good woman with a predictable twist.
The film's central conflict is a "will he or won't he grow up" dramatic question, and such a plot obviously reinforces traditional values, or in this case, traditional Southern mores. Classics, In 1996, the play was revived at the Criterion Center Stage Right in New York, in a production directed by Overall, though it's one of his lesser works, fans of Tennessee Williams might enjoy this film.
