The famed command module Columbia carried Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins to the moon nearly 50 years ago, and to celebrate … 107, manufactured by North American Rockwell, was one of three parts of the complete Apollo spacecraft. The other two parts were the Service Module and the Lunar Module, nicknamed "Eagle." Armstrong and pilot Aldrin landed the spacecraft, Eagle, on the moon's Sea of Tranquillity. "All of the venues actually had to submit engineering documentation to make sure that the floor load was one that could support not just the Columbia, but also the rest of the traveling exhibit," Kathrin Halpern, a project director at the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, told NPR. The Command Module is the only portion of the spacecraft to return to Earth. It was physically transferred to the Smithsonian in 1971 following a NASA-sponsored tour of American cities. "We recognize our responsibility to use data and technology for good. Learn how aviation and spaceflight transformed the world.
